Living with Giant/Cathedral Commons Construction – Update #11

December 21, 2014

Work on the South (Giant) Block is nearly complete, but work on the remaining portion drags on. Construction continues on the 13 residential units above the Giant (where 1-bedroom units will rent for $2,500 a month, 2-bedroom units for $4,500, and 3-bedroom units for $7,500). The town houses on Idaho Ave. will not be finished before February. And work on the North (apartment) Block (including Starbucks) will also continue at least until February. No information is yet available on rental rates in that building, including rents on the 14 affordable housing units in the North Block.

There is reason to hope that the end of 2014 will see the end of the disruptive water-line work on Wisconsin Ave. and the signalization and related construction at the Idaho/Ordway/Wisconsin intersection.

There are several unresolved issues with regard to parking. It is intended that a raffle will be held to allocate 30 spaces every year to members of the community during specified hours (perhaps 9 pm to 8 am), but specifics remain to be worked out. The same is true for parking for residents of the 13 North Block loft units and the hours when parking validated by non-Cathedral-Commons retailers will be allowed (perhaps 7 pm to 1 am). A meeting including Bozzuto, Parking Management, Inc. (PMI), the ANC, and others will be scheduled as soon as the ANC hears from the Zoning Administrator in response to their request for information. It is also possible that parking meters may be installed on Idaho.

Information continues to dribble in about tenants in the development. New leases have been signed by Grilled Oyster, an upscale restaurant which has a restaurant in Potomac (http://thegrilledoystercompany.com/); Le Village Marché, a home goods boutique that has a shop in Shirlington (http://www.levillagemarche.com/); Core 72, a fitness clothing boutique (http://www.core72dc.com/); and Pure Barre, a fitness studio (http://purebarre.com/). The prime spaces in the South Block “rotunda” and the “flatiron” at the corner of Wisconsin and Idaho are being held back until the development is complete and more attractive to tenants.

For more details, see the minutes of the December 3rd meeting on the ANC3C website. The next Liaison Committee meeting is tentatively scheduled for January 7th at 6:30 pm at the police station. The public is welcome.
