Giant/Cathedral Commons

In May, 2008, a development team headed by “Stop & Shop Supermarket Company” (owned by Ahold, an international retailing group based in the Netherlands, and including Giant) submitted an application to the DC Office of Zoning for a Planned Unit Development of the grocery store and adjacent land. The area in the development is bounded by Idaho Avenue on the north and west, Wisconsin Avenue on the east, and adjacent property fronting on Macomb Street to the south. Newark Street runs east-west through the center of the site, dividing it into two parcels.

The nature and size of the development was resolved in 2009 when the DC Office of Zoning issued its Final Order approving the Wisconsin Avenue Planned Unit Development and Zoning Map.

The new Giant will be approximately 56,000 sq. ft with another 128,000 sq. ft. of retail. The residential component will consist of 137 apartments and 8 townhomes. The mixed-use project is dubbed “Cathedral Commons”.

In December 2011, Giant Food of Landover, Md. announced the selection of The Bozzuto Group as partner for its development of Cathedral Commons. Representatives of Bozzuto hosted neighborhood meetings with Cleveland Park residents in spring 2012 sharing its construction time-line.
