A Tale of Two Banks: Banking for the Public Good

Thursday, March 15, 7:00 pm

Cleveland Park Congregational Church

34th and Lowell streets

6:30 pm CPCA business meeting

Come hear how a DC public bank and a DC green bank can help create a vibrant, environmentally sustainable city with affordable housing and more local businesses without tax increases.  And learn how your taxes can do double duty!

CM Mary Cheh and Amir Kirkwood with Amalgamated Bank will speak about the green bank. A bill has been introduced in the City Council to create a green bank for private investments and referred to CM Cheh’s Committee on Transportation and the Environment.

CM David Grosso and CPCA President Ruth Caplan will speak about the proposal for a DC public bank and the upcoming feasibility study.  With a public bank, the city will deposit its funds in its own bank and make loans just like any bank, but with a focus on our city.

Zach Weinstein with DC Reinvest will make the case for why the city should stop depositing our tax dollars in Wells Fargo which invests in private prisons and dirty oil, rather than investing right here in DC.

CPCA Board member Mark Rosenman will moderate the panel and make sure there is plenty of time for your questions.
